Senior Patrol Leader
Troop 87 is scout-led. The adults train and guide — the scouts run the troop.
Scout Leadership Positions
- Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) — the top youth leader; leads weekly meetings and attends at least half of all campouts.
- Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) — fills in for the SPL.
- Patrol Leader / Assistant Patrol Leader — lead their patrols and report to the SPL.
- Quartermaster — inventory and care of troop equipment.
- Scribe — attendance records and troop correspondence.
- Historian — keeps a record of troop activities and campouts.
- Librarian — troop records and merit badge books.
- Chaplain’s Aide — leads worship on campouts and closing prayers at meetings.
How Positions Are Filled
Scouts who have reached Star rank or higher and completed National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) may run for SPL or ASPL. The SPL is elected by the scouts; Patrol Leaders are elected by their patrols; the SPL appoints the other positions.
Adult Volunteers
Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Chaplain, Service Project Coordinator and committee members are all volunteers. Every adult completes Youth Protection Training, and the troop pays for adult training.
